Assignment 2
Many times girls who explore their sexuality at a young age, or even at all, are branded sluts. This is because sex involves risk of such horrid consequences as HIV/AIDS, other sexually transmitted diseases, and even pregnancy. However, according to Rebecca Walker, exploring your sexuality is not a sinful act; in fact, it is the only way to discover ones true self. She supports this opinion by using her own personal experiences to conclude that each time she entertained a sexual partner, she learned a little more about herself and her agency as a woman. Walker believes that having sex is her birthright and it should be practiced and honed into a supreme power. This power of sex is one every woman has, if they choose to exploit it. The cultural taboos associated with sex only hinder a woman’s desire to employ this right and therefore not only obstructs a woman’s path to self- understanding but also stunts her potential power. In conclusion, Walker believes that sex I more than an animalistic act shared between a male and female, it is an intimate act shared between the body, mind and spirit of a female. Sex should not be shunned by society, but embraced. It is only through this transformation that the young females of today will be unashamed of self-exploration through sex and uncover things about themselves that couldn’t have been exposed otherwise.
